Advantages and Disadvantages of Current Modes of Transport

Along with the development of the economy, today’s modes of transportation are also more diverse and richer. Businesses wishing to transport goods can arbitrarily use many different types of services. Some of the most popular modes of transportation in Vietnam today are rail, water, road and air.

Each mode of transportation has its own advantages and limitations that we should know to make the right choice. Understanding the needs of customers, Bestcargo would like to introduce the advantages and disadvantages of different modes of transportation for you to choose which is the most optimal shipping method for your goods!

Advantages and Disadvantages of Current Modes of Transport

What are the advantages and disadvantages of the current modes of transport?

Each mode of freight transport has its advantages and disadvantages as well as different ranges of use.

1. Road transport

Advantage

  • Road transport usually uses trucks mainly, so it is very flexible in the process of transporting goods, doesn’t depend on time and there is no specific time limit, just need to be mutually agreed upon by the parties
  • Shipping times are subject to change.
  • It is possible to select the means, transport route or quantity of goods as required.
  • Goods transported by road will save a lot of time.
  • Efficient freight transport at short and medium distances.
  • This form of transport has a high storage capacity. Ensure the quality of the goods during the transportation route.
  • Goods are transported from the sender’s warehouse to the receiver’s warehouse without going through any transport intermediaries. Limit the process of loading and unloading goods by labor, reducing costs.

Disadvantages

  • Long-distance transportation often has to pay additional road surcharges: toll stations, fuel fees, tolls, etc.
  • Road transport also contains many risks such as traffic accidents, traffic jams, etc., which greatly affect goods and delivery time.
  • The volume and size of goods transported is more limited than shipping by rail and sea.
  • Much depends on weather.

2. Rail transport

Advantage

  • Fares are much lower than other types of road transport, for many weight frames and many types of goods, especially in long-distance transport routes such as North-South freight.
  • There are stable freight rates for a long time, little fluctuations. Customers take the initiative in allocating reasonable costs to the business. Since the cost of rail transport does not depend much on the cost of fuel, rail freight rates are not adjusted when gasoline prices fluctuate continuously.
  • Transporting heavy goods over long distances.
  • High safety, ensuring goods are not lost or damaged; Packed into specialized carriages (regular wagons, Container cars, super-heavy carriages, refrigerated carriages). Running fixed and continuous should ensure the goods are safe and the possibility of loss and loss is minimal.
  • Less affected by weather conditions, climate, traffic jams, road damage, etc.
  • Time: Trains always follow a fixed schedule. Therefore, the time is less volatile compared to transportation by road.

Disadvantages

Only works on the existing rail system, the route is fixed and must be combined with other forms of transport. Therefore, it is not flexible in the transportation process. Therefore, for urgent orders, which need to be delivered quickly, goods with a short shelf life such as vegetables and fruits, the railway does not have the advantage over road and rail. air

3. Sea transport

Advantage

  • Transport routes are more comfortable and open than road transport.
Can transport goods of large volume and size. The volume of shipping by sea can be hundreds, thousands of times higher than by air.
  • Low shipping costs. It is considered a top priority in the transportation of goods between countries. Because shipping in a large volume, the cost is also reduced.
  • The problem of collision during transportation is also limited, safe for goods. Because the sea lanes are very wide, collisions are also rare.
  • Creating conditions for economic exchanges with countries and regions around the world. The need to transport goods to the sea area of another country must be accepted by them. This promotes economic exchanges between countries in order to create conditions for easy goods circulation and economic development of the country.

Disadvantages

Must combine with road transport to be able to deliver goods to the place.
The transit time is slow and not flexible by road because it depends on the train schedule.

4. Air freight

Advantage

  • Air freight has the highest speed, so the transit time is very fast. Transport time is 40 times higher than by road.
  • Air freight makes it easy to ship goods overseas. Collisions are also rare because the accident rate is very low. Better safety of goods.
  • Air transport should always be safer than other means of transport. The risk of a plane crash is always less than that of a passenger car, truck or train.

Disadvantages

  • Air freight charges are very high, especially for international routes. On peak days (holidays, New Year’s Day), air freight can be 3, 4 times higher.
  • Air freight often has restrictions on the volume and weight of goods. It is also not suitable for bulky goods, high volume goods or low value goods.
Customs procedures when transporting goods are also quite complicated and time consuming.
  • Customers always have to arrive earlier than the scheduled flight time to ensure the flight schedule.

5. Transport by pipeline

Pipeline transportation is the process of transporting goods continuously across many different terrains from the point of origin to the point of destination using a system of pipelines connected from one country to another.

Some characteristics of this type of transport are: goods move but vehicles are fixed. Delivery and receipt parties who are also vehicle owners often sign agreements on supply and distribution of products before construction and transportation are carried out.
